DESTIN(Y)ATION, 2023-2025

 

Dodecalogy of short plays that are a constituent part of twelve shows staged in Slovenia, Ukraine, Serbia, and Romania from 2023 to 2025.  

Plays are inspired by the Slovenian town of Nova Gorica in the years 1972 to 1983.

THE SKY, 2020

 

Something extraordinary happens on the most ordinary quarantine spring day.  

 

A short play commissioned by the Folkteatern Gothenburg for the ‘Urgent Drama’ online project during the Covid-19 pandemic about family life during the quarantine. It is a play about a family staying at home during a quiet time with no traffic, neither on the ground nor in the sky. On the other hand at home, there is an ongoing tumultuous traffic

THE LAST LOVE LETTER2017

A short play that installs romantic longing into the diffused present-day. 

 

The last love letter is a contemporary post-dramatic play that deals with romantic yearning as an escape from the brutal reality, as a dream within the chaotic every day.  The play is a roller-coaster of various emotional states and concrete dramatic situations that reflect western society and its tendency to violence and ignorance. The last love letter was commissioned by the journal Dialogi, issue Why feminism today?

BLAME IT ALL ON BOŠKO BUHA2011

A short play reflecting a dispersed contemporary reality. 

 

Blame it all on Boško Buha is a contemporary post-dramatic play that reflects dispersed reality within the content and also the form. There are no characters in the traditional sense, there are just multiple voices from society. The play is an avalanche of critical points in the world, such as wars, sexism, bureaucratic absurdity, domestic violence, poverty, and many others, smoothly interlaced in a subtle, witty and critical entirety.

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST2007

A ready-made in five acts about applying for a visa to cross the borders.

A ready-made was conceived in times when Serbian citizens needed to apply for a visa to enter the Republic of Slovenia, which was quite an issue as there was an on-going collaboration with Serbian artists. The play was a part of an omnibus Nine Easy Pieces of Preglej initiative.

A VISIT2007

A girl knocks on her boyfriend's window only to find out he's not in, sleeping. And also not alone.

Eve is knocking on Vlado's window at 3 am. He opens wearing his underwear but doesn't let her in. She leaves, taking few moments to meditate upon the situation, and then comes back knocking. Vlado, still in his underwear, opens the door only to send Eve away and close the door in front of her nose. She knocks again, and the story repeats till Vlado tells her he is in the bed with another woman. But Eve keeps insisting, threatening to awake his parents and neighbors, so Vlado finally lets her in.

LOVING WILLY2005

A short play depicting a love triangle, culminating with a verbal confrontation between both women waiting for Willy, who locked himself in the bathroom.   

Willy decided to take a break from the tedious burdens of being the object of contention for two women and found shelter in the bathroom of the restaurant he works in. Both Ann and Joan try to convince him to come out and by doing so, reveal the circumstances behind his frustrations and the complex nature of their relationships. The fight escalates and at one point Joan threatens to decline signing the divorce papers, which would prevent Willy and Ann to lead the life they supposedly want. At the height of the confrontation, Willy walks out of the lavatory without even being noticed, and the women continue their quest to persuade him to come out, without ever realizing that he is no longer there.

THE SOCKS2005

As bombs go off, we are familiarized with a couple fleeing for the lives, yet get caught up in a silly argument about socks that is clearly a metaphor for their deeper emotional struggles.   

 

On their way to a bomb shelter, a couple is frantically packing their belongings and making sure nothing is left behind. The Husband is urgently trying to convince his wife that everything is in order and that time is running out, while she insists that he bring different socks. It is quickly evident that their fight is rooted in their obviously fragile relationship. With neither one willing to back down, they are left stranded in their apartment and left to the mercy of the bombardment above.
